The 2027 Kia Telluride is all-new this year with a fresh, modern, and thoroughly Kia design. Kurt Kahl, Chief Designer at Kia Design Center America, spoke to us about that new design and how his team worked to evolve its distinctive look without losing what made it special.

The original Telluride turned heads with its boxy, authentic SUV vibe that resonated with buyers. For 2027, Kia leaned into that foundation while weaving in fresh elements to keep it competitive in a crowded three-row segment.

Kahl, who oversaw the exterior design, shared how his team approached the refresh. They aimed to amplify the vehicle’s strengths, making it bolder and more refined for today’s drivers.

Why does this matter right now?

The 2027 Kia Telluride arrives at a pivotal moment for family SUVs, as buyers grapple with rising fuel costs and a push toward electrification. Kia’s introduction of a hybrid option addresses those concerns head-on, offering up to 329 horsepower and improved efficiency without ditching the gas engine entirely. This timing aligns with broader industry shifts, where hybrids bridge the gap for folks not ready for full EVs.

Kahl explained the design evolution as a chance to build on success. He described how the team took the big, bold, boxy authentic SUV feeling from the first generation and layered in Opposites United, Kia’s current design philosophy. That let them exaggerate the contrasting elements, like sharp geometric lines against rounded wheel arches, to distill what makes the Telluride stand out as tough yet functional.

“We felt like we came up with an interesting formula that really responded to the customer in the first Telluride.” – Kurt Kahl, Chief Designer at Kia Design Center America

This matters because families want vehicles that handle daily errands and weekend getaways with equal ease. The Telluride’s increased size, now stretched by 2.3 inches overall with a longer wheelbase, means more room for car seats, groceries, and sports gear. In a market where remote work has folks eyeing road trips again, this SUV’s blend of comfort and capability feels spot-on.

Think about loading up for a family hike. The expanded cargo space lets you toss in coolers and tents without playing Tetris in the back. It’s practical touches like these that make the Telluride relevant now, especially as competitors ramp up their hybrid game.

Buyers also face tougher safety standards and tech expectations. The 2027 model steps up with advanced driver assists, making highway merges less stressful during rush hour. Kahl’s team ensured the design supports these features seamlessly, like integrating sleek lighting that enhances visibility.

How does it compare to rivals or alternatives?

Stack the 2027 Kia Telluride against the Toyota Grand Highlander, and you see Kia’s edge in styling and value. Both offer hybrid powertrains, but the Telluride’s 329-horsepower hybrid outmuscles the Grand Highlander’s setup. Pricing starts lower for the Telluride too, at $46,490 for the hybrid EX front-wheel drive, making it accessible without skimping on features.

The Honda Pilot trails in power, with its V6 topping out below the Telluride’s turbo options. Kia’s interior feels more upscale, with available premium materials that rival luxury brands at a fraction of the cost. On off-road trims like the X-Pro, the Telluride adds all-terrain tires and raised suspension, outpacing the Pilot’s milder TrailSport variant.

Kahl highlighted the lighting evolution that ties the front and rear together. He described how the original had square daytime running lights, then vertical elements in the facelift, and now strong vertical stripes that wrap around the vehicle for a consistent, bold look whether the lights are on or off.

“We really wanted the two strong vertical stripes to be an element that works around the vehicle.” Kurt Kahl, Chief Designer at Kia Design Center America

For families comparing against the Hyundai Palisade, the Telluride shares a platform but differentiates with rugged cues. Its boxier profile appeals to those wanting a tougher look, while the Palisade leans softer. Fuel economy edges out slightly in the Telluride hybrid, with a Kia-estimated figure of up to 35 mpg combined.

Who is this for and who should skip it?

The 2027 Kia Telluride suits growing families who need three rows without the bulk of a full-size, truck-based SUV. It’s ideal for parents hauling kids, dogs, and gear to soccer practice or cabin weekends, thanks to its spacious interior and optional all-wheel drive. Adventurous types will appreciate the X-Line trims designed for light trails.

“I think it’s like a powerful feeling SUV for the customer, feeling protected at the same time it has this luxury, cozy, inviting feeling.” Kurt Kahl, Chief Designer at Kia Design Center America

Skip it if you’re in a tight urban spot with limited parking where the larger dimensions might feel cumbersome. Solo commuters or empty-nesters could find it overkill and be better off with something smaller like the Kia Sportage for easier maneuvering and better mileage.

Kahl captured the overall presence of the new Telluride perfectly. He noted how the sculpting and upright stance create that blend of ruggedness and refinement, especially once you step inside the spacious cabin.

What is the long-term significance?

The 2027 Telluride signals Kia’s commitment to hybrids as a bridge to electrification, potentially influencing how midsize SUVs evolve amid stricter emissions rules. By offering both gas and hybrid without forcing a choice, Kia positions itself as adaptable, which could boost brand loyalty in uncertain times.

This model’s design refinements, like sharper lines and premium touches, elevate Kia’s image from budget player to premium contender. Long-term, it might pressure rivals to match the value, leading to better options across the board.

Kahl shared what stands out most to him when he recently saw the vehicle from a high angle on the mat terrain ground outside during a drive. He loved the really sharp fender lines counterbalanced by those crisp edges coming off the rocker, the way the pure geometry and crispness blend so smoothly into the body side, and how difficult it was to execute that sculpting where an edge just dissolves into a smooth shape. The modeling team pulled it off with perfect feasibility and stamping.

It wasn’t easy to get the look just right, but it was a challenge that paid off with the final product. “It was really difficult to execute some of that sculpting where you have an edge that just dissolves into a smooth shape. But I think the way the modeling team executed that and then with the amount of feasibility, with the stamping, all that came together and I’m proud of it,” said Kahl.

“The really sharp fender lines and then counterbalanced with the sharp edges coming off the rocker, that’s my favorite part.” Kurt Kahl, Chief Designer at Kia Design Center America

In the bigger picture, this SUV embodies practical innovation. Families investing now get a vehicle that ages well, handling life’s changes from school runs to empty-nest adventures. The 2027 Telluride isn’t just an update, it’s a thoughtful progression that keeps Kia ahead in the family SUV game.
