Hyundai Boulder Concept Takes Aim at Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco

The Hyundai Boulder Concept was a closely guarded secret that finally made its debut at the 2026 New York International Auto Show. The rugged body-on-frame SUV concept marks a daring departure for the brand best known for family-friendly vehicles.

At the big reveal, we spoke with Sang Yup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design Center at Hyundai Motor Company, about this striking design of the Boulder. Lee shared his passion for every detail from the flush lighting to the timeless proportions that could challenge established players like the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler.

The Boulder Concept shows off a boxy stance, massive 18-inch wheels, and a brushed metallic finish that screams capability. Lee explained how the design team pushed boundaries while keeping the vehicle practical for real-world American adventures.

A Bold Step into Body-on-Frame Territory

The concept previews a new fully boxed body-on-frame architecture that Hyundai plans to use for a midsize pickup arriving by 2030. Lee emphasized that the Boulder is not just one vehicle, but part of a broader lineup designed specifically for US customers. The team drew inspiration from the outdoors and rugged lifestyles that define much of American vehicle ownership.

“This is something that nobody expected from Hyundai, so this is why we kept it very secret until the last minute we unveiled the car.” – Sang Yup Lee

Designers focused on fundamental shapes rather than fleeting trends. This approach ensures the vehicle stands out immediately while maintaining long-term appeal. Lee noted that authentic and pure designs age better and create lasting emotional connections with owners.

Design Details That Celebrate Functionality

Every element received obsessive attention including the thin metal coverings that allow light to shine through while remaining flush with the body. Lee described how the team intentionally widened gaps around lamps and panels to avoid quality issues common in tighter tolerances. These larger gaps create beautiful light gradations and add depth when viewed up close.

“We have a nice turn signal on the top of it to keep a bit of surprise. It looks like it is just metal.” – Sang Yup Lee

The tailgate features a simple robust handle reminiscent of classic appliances and opens via dual hinges for access from either side. Lee walked through the rear design highlighting the soft sections and practical details that make the vehicle easy to use in tough conditions. He stressed that designers must understand engineering to bring such bold ideas to production reality.

Inspired by American Icons with a Fresh Hyundai Twist

The face of the Boulder features soft character lines on the fenders combined with strong gaps and a distinctive grille. Lee explained that the design prioritizes timeless value, so customers understand and appreciate it immediately without it feeling dated over time.

LED lighting plays both functional and brand-identifying roles with bright illumination visible from long distances. Up close the lamps reveal three-dimensional qualities and that, especially at night, give the Boulder a distinctive look. Lee highlighted how the design evolves Hyundai’s signature lighting while adapting it for bigger bolder vehicles suited to outdoor adventures.

“The rear obviously we got a bit of the inspiration from streamliner design, almost like a back in the days 1950s refrigerator.” -Sang up Lee

It’s not every day you hear a designer say they were inspired by a refrigerator, but in the case of the Boulder, it works beautifully. Lee showed how that curved, 1950s vibe translated into a streamlined tailgate. “There’s this very soft section with a stylized handle. It’s easy to grab. The same thing on the rear, and on the tailgate we put dual hinge,” said Lee. It’s style and function combined into a vehicle that, if they build it, would be a truly unique off-roader.

Customer Feedback Will Shape the Boulder’s Future

The concept stretches Hyundai’s comfort zone while respecting the strong heritage of competitors in the segment. Lee expressed deep respect for vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco and noted that any new entrant must deliver exceptional design and capability plus meaningful advantages. More affordable pricing and Hyundai’s longer warranty stand to make it a highly competitive vehicle.

“This is a very important test.” – Sang Yup Lee

Lee and his team are excited to see what people think as they evaluate the potential for bringing this concept to production. The enthusiastic reactions at the debut suggest strong demand for a Hyundai-branded body-on-frame off-roader. Details on powertrains and exact timing remain under discussion but the foundation is clearly built for American buyers seeking adventure without compromise.

“The response that I got so far is absolutely fantastic. So, let’s see what happens.” – Sang Yup Lee

The Boulder Concept’s blend of bold proportions, thoughtful details, and practical innovation could redefine expectations in the off-road SUV space. As Lee and the global design team review the largely positive feedback received at the debut, the possibility of a production version gets that much closer to reality.
