2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV: 1,153 HP, but at What Cost?

The 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV promises staggering speed and charging capability, but American buyers need answers beyond the 1,153-hp headline.

2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV: The Numbers Are Only the Beginning

Mercedes-AMG has announced its first full-size SUV developed entirely in-house, and it is taking an unusually aggressive approach to the electric performance market. The 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV will reach U.S. dealerships in summer 2027 with three versions, led by a GT 63 SUV producing a claimed 1,153 peak horsepower. Mercedes estimates a 2.4-second run to 60 mph using a one-foot rollout. That’s astonishing acceleration for a vehicle with a full-size SUV’s practicality, but the more important question for drivers is how consistently it can deliver that performance.

AMG says its three axial-flux motors and directly cooled high-voltage battery can sustain up to 711 horsepower in the flagship. Continuous output is a better clue to engineering ambition than a dramatic peak figure. A vehicle that can briefly produce incredible power is one achievement. One that manages battery temperature, delivers repeatable acceleration and then accepts a rapid recharge is a harder assignment.

Three Models, Three Different Buyer Decisions

The entry AMG GT 53 SUV gets two synchronous motors, 536 horsepower and a usable 106-kWh battery. Its estimated zero-to-60 time is 3.7 seconds with rollout. Move to the GT 55 and AMG specifies three axial-flux motors, 805 peak horsepower and a 128-kWh battery. The GT 63 uses the same stated battery capacity but brings its higher peak output, standard active suspension and carbon-ceramic brakes. Every version offers variable all-wheel drive.

My early buying advice is to resist choosing solely on the horsepower hierarchy. The GT 53 is already much quicker than most families could reasonably need, while the GT 55 could offer an appealing balance if pricing and options are sensible. Mercedes has not supplied U.S. prices in the release. Without those numbers, nobody can honestly identify the value pick yet. Also worth remembering: a high-performance electric SUV is still a substantial vehicle. AMG’s published European curb-weight figure for the GT 63 is 2,695 kilograms, about 5,940 pounds.

That Remarkable Charging Claim Needs an Asterisk

Mercedes lists up to 710-kW DC charging for the GT 55 and GT 63, with a claimed 10-to-80-percent charging time of 12 minutes under specified conditions. The GT 53 can accept up to 600 kW. The manufacturer also cites up to 450 kilometers of additional WLTP range in ten minutes for the larger-battery models. That’s roughly 280 miles, but it is not an EPA-tested American range figure, and it is not a promise that every charging stop will deliver that result.

The U.S. Department of Transportation explains how fast-charging speeds depend on station output and operating conditions. Its published examples commonly cover stations well below AMG’s stated 710-kW ceiling. Find a compatible station, with enough available power and the battery at the right temperature, and the technology could be extraordinary. Find an ordinary charger and the theoretical peak becomes less relevant than the actual charging curve.

For perspective, the EPA range-testing process is different from the European WLTP procedure Mercedes uses for its preliminary estimates. The company quotes up to 700 kilometers, approximately 435 miles, for the larger battery in favorable WLTP configurations. Do not put 435 miles into a U.S. road-trip budget until EPA numbers arrive.

Chassis Sophistication Matters More Than Synthetic Noise

The real fascination is how AMG intends to make a large EV change direction. The GT 63 gets AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL+ as standard. Its hydraulically linked suspension can counteract body roll, pitching under braking and lifting during acceleration. Rear-wheel steering is standard, with up to six degrees of steering in the opposite direction at lower speeds. Those are useful tools for making a large SUV feel more manageable in parking lots and more settled on fast roads.

AMG also offers recorded V8 or six-cylinder sounds, simulated gear shifts and seat vibration. I understand the emotional argument, but I would much rather judge steering feel, brake consistency and ride quality on a real road than judge a soundtrack through showroom speakers. The vehicle has not been independently driven for this story, so any definitive ride verdict would be premature.

Owners should also understand high-voltage battery safety and why specialized service matters. The performance technology is sophisticated, and a repair or tire replacement on this type of vehicle may deserve different attention from the average family crossover.

Is It Still Useful as an SUV?

There’s a five-seat cabin, a folding three-passenger rear bench and 21.4 cubic feet of stated rear cargo capacity, plus a modest 2.8-cubic-foot front trunk. A 14-inch central touchscreen is angled toward the driver; a second 14-inch front-passenger display is optional. The panoramic roof can switch between transparent and opaque settings. These are appealing features, although I want to see child-seat access, luggage loading and rear-seat comfort before declaring it a family triumph.

Mercedes says the vehicle supports the NACS charging connection in the United States. The Department of Energy’s EV connector guide is a useful reminder that plug compatibility and available charging power are separate matters. Similarly, cold-weather owners should read the Department of Energy’s advice on winter EV range, since heat and battery conditioning can change energy consumption.

My Verdict Before the First Drive

The 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV is intriguing precisely because its least flashy engineering may be the most valuable: cooling, repeatable output, suspension control and a genuinely short recharge under ideal conditions. But those strengths must survive the ordinary tests of ownership. I want the U.S. price, EPA range, real charging results and the experience of driving over imperfect pavement. AMG has supplied an extraordinary specification sheet. Summer 2027 will begin to tell us whether it has built an extraordinary SUV.
