2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback EV Now Plug and Play
By Robert R Guio
Mitsubishi is bringing the Eclipse name back again, but nobody should confuse the 2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback EV with the turbocharged coupe of the 1990s. This new Eclipse is a five-passenger electric crossover designed for a more practical job.
It is also Mitsubishi’s first new battery-electric vehicle for the U.S. market in years. The company is leaning on its alliance with Nissan, using the latest Nissan Leaf as the engineering foundation while adding Mitsubishi-specific styling, equipment and warranty coverage.
That shared hardware is not a weakness. Mitsubishi is starting with a modern EV platform rather than developing one from scratch.

A New Mitsubishi EV With Familiar Bones
The Eclipse Sportback uses a 75-kWh lithium-ion battery beneath the floor and a single front electric motor producing 214 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is the only configuration announced so far.
Mitsubishi adds different front lighting, grille treatment, bumpers, rear styling and 18-inch wheels. The sloping roofline gives it more of a hatchback-coupe profile than a traditional SUV.

Inside are dual 14.3-inch displays, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel and an eight-way power driver’s seat. One trim keeps ordering simple, while an available Technology package adds an electrochromic panoramic roof that turns opaque at the touch of a button, Bose audio, roof rails and a power liftgate.

282 Miles and NACS Charging Make It Usable
The headline number is up to 282 miles of EPA-estimated driving range. That puts the Eclipse Sportback beyond local-commuter territory.
Road-trip charging is handled through a native NACS port, giving owners access to compatible Tesla Superchargers. Mitsubishi says the battery can accept DC fast charging at up to 150 kW and go from 10 to 80 percent in roughly 35 minutes under ideal conditions.

There is also a separate J1772 port for Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging, useful for owners who already have J1772 equipment at home. Battery preconditioning and a heat pump help charging and climate-control efficiency.

What the Eclipse Sportback Is Like to Drive
I got to drive the new Eclipse recently just outside Seattle and could tell immediately, as I left the parking lot, that Mitsubishi wasn’t going for the neck-jerking torque you might think of with some EVs, but rather a more practical one suited for everyday use.

The immediate electric torque was strong enough for merging into freeway traffic, and occasional spirited driving through the twisty hills we were on, but it never was violent, just smooth and strong
The low-mounted battery gave the vehicle a planted feel. Pushing through a twisty mountain road, the body roll is slightly noticeable, but the handling remains predictable, never questionable. The retuned steering felt exactly like what it’s supposed to be, a confident daily EV.

Drivers can choose five regenerative-braking levels using steering-wheel paddles, plus a stronger e-Step setting. It slows the vehicle aggressively but does not provide full one-pedal driving because the brake pedal is still required for a complete stop. It was great driving through a twisty mountain road where I never needed to touch the brake pedal.

The Warranty May Be Its Best Argument
Mitsubishi’s biggest advantage may appear after the test drive. Coverage includes a five-year/60,000-mile new-vehicle warranty and 10-year/100,000-mile coverage for the electric powertrain and battery, along with two years or 30,000 miles of limited maintenance.
Final pricing remains the missing piece. If Mitsubishi positions the Eclipse Sportback competitively, 282 miles of range, Supercharger access, generous equipment and that long warranty could make it appealing in an increasingly crowded EV market.

The name may invite arguments among longtime Eclipse fans, but the vehicle itself is easy to understand. This is not an electric sports coupe pretending the 1990s never ended. It is a useful, quiet electric crossover built for the way people actually drive today. That may not be nostalgic, but it could prove considerably more relevant.
