2027 Kia Niro Price Climbs as Lineup Goes Hybrid-Only

By Robert R Guio

The 2027 Kia Niro starts at $29,890 before destination, but the bigger story is a hybrid-only lineup with more tech and higher trim prices.

The number I would put at the top of a shopping list is not $29,890. It is $31,385.

That is what the least expensive 2027 Kia Niro costs once Kia’s $1,495 destination charge is included, before taxes, registration, options or anything a dealer may add. The refreshed Niro is still one of the more efficient small crossovers on paper, but its value equation has changed enough that buyers should look past the headline MSRP.

Kia has also simplified the Niro’s mission. For 2027, the U.S. lineup is hybrid-only. There is no gasoline-only version to step down to, and Kia is no longer presenting the Niro nameplate as a menu of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric choices. The refreshed car is being positioned around one idea: maximum everyday efficiency without asking the owner to plug it in.

What the 2027 Kia Niro price actually buys

The lineup now runs LX, S, EX, SX and SX Touring. Before destination, Kia prices them at $29,890, $30,590, $31,390, $35,440 and $38,990 respectively. Once destination is added, those figures become $31,385, $32,085, $32,885, $36,935 and $40,485.

That last number matters because the Niro changes character as you climb the trim ladder. At roughly $31,000 to $33,000 delivered, it is an efficiency-led small crossover. At more than $40,000 delivered, the SX Touring is asking shoppers to choose compact dimensions and fuel economy over the extra size, power or all-wheel-drive capability available in other hybrids at similar money.

The year-over-year comparison is also hard to ignore. The 2026 Niro Hybrid LX carried a $27,390 MSRP, so the refreshed LX is $2,500 more expensive before destination. The EX rises by $1,200, the SX by $2,050 and the SX Touring by $3,200. Destination stays at $1,495.

The good news is that Kia did not simply add price and a new grille. The 2027 model gets revised front and rear styling, Star Map lighting signatures, a redesigned cabin, a standard 12.3-inch infotainment screen and a substantially updated driver-assistance menu.

The new S trim looks like the smart money

If I were building a Niro shopping list from the spec sheet alone, I would start with the new S rather than the LX.

The reason is simple arithmetic. The S costs only $700 more than the LX before destination, yet Kia’s equipment chart shows a useful jump in everyday comfort. The S gets a 10-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, second-row air vents and navigation-based Smart Cruise Control. Those are features an owner notices repeatedly, not showroom decorations that become invisible after the first week.

The EX is another $800 above the S. It adds front and rear parking-distance warning and paddle shifters, and it opens the door to some additional equipment. That may be worthwhile, but the S has the cleaner value story because its price step is so small.

The SX is where the Niro turns more premium. It adds ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, upgraded LED lighting, Digital Key 2.0 and a standard Harman Kardon audio system. Kia also lists Highway Driving Assist on the SX.

The SX Touring goes further with 18-inch wheels, Highway Driving Assist 2, Blind-Spot View Monitor, Surround View Monitor and the more advanced Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 2 package. Those are useful technologies, particularly the camera-based blind-spot and surround views, but shoppers should notice where Kia has placed them. The most sophisticated assistance hardware sits on the most expensive Niro.

That is an important distinction between “available” and “included.” A feature can headline a press release even when a buyer must choose the top trim to get it.

Efficiency remains the Niro’s strongest argument

Kia has left the core powertrain alone. A 1.6-liter gasoline four-cylinder works with an electric motor and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission for 139 combined horsepower. This is not a hybrid built to win a stoplight drag race.

That does not automatically make it underpowered for its job. The more relevant question is whether the Niro delivers the kind of fuel economy that justifies giving up the extra power and traction available elsewhere.

Kia’s current 2027 specifications list 53 mpg city, 46 mpg highway, and 50 mpg combined across the range. That is the figure that keeps the Niro interesting. A conventional hybrid also avoids the charging question entirely. The battery is replenished through regenerative braking and the gasoline engine, which is why a hybrid can work well for apartment dwellers, renters and anyone else without dependable access to a charger.

For readers who want a useful technical explanation, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hybrid Electric Vehicles guide explains how the gasoline engine and electric motor share the workload. Its companion page on how hybrid electric cars work breaks down regenerative braking and the major components.

The 2027 refresh also includes suspension retuning and work aimed at improving ride comfort and cabin quietness. Those changes deserve more attention than they usually get in a pricing announcement. The Niro already has a modest power output, so refinement is one of the ways Kia can make the vehicle feel more expensive without adding horsepower.

Until we drive the refreshed car, those improvements remain manufacturer claims rather than Test Miles findings. That distinction matters. A quieter cabin on a spec sheet is promising, but road surface, tire choice and speed determine whether the change is obvious in the real world.

The Corolla Cross Hybrid exposes the Niro tradeoff

The closest reality check comes from Toyota. The current 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid starts at $29,795 before destination, just $95 below the Niro LX’s $29,890 MSRP. Toyota gives the Corolla Cross Hybrid standard all-wheel drive and 196 combined horsepower, while its manufacturer-estimated combined fuel economy is 42 mpg.

Kia counters with front-wheel drive, 139 horsepower and a listed 50 mpg combined rating. That is the whole decision in one paragraph. The Toyota offers substantially more power and standard all-wheel drive. The Kia promises better fuel economy.

For a driver in a region where winter traction is a recurring concern, the absence of all-wheel drive on the Niro deserves real consideration. For someone commuting long distances in a milder climate, eight additional miles per gallon on the combined rating may be far more valuable than sending power to the rear wheels.

Buyers should compare official window-sticker ratings rather than treating any single mileage number as a guarantee. The EPA explains on its fuel economy label guide that standardized estimates are designed to make vehicles comparable, while actual mileage still varies with driving style, weather and conditions.

There is also a price ceiling to consider. The Niro SX Touring reaches $40,485 with destination. At that point I would widen the shopping list. Even if the Niro remains the efficiency champion, a buyer spending more than $40,000 should compare larger hybrids, standard all-wheel-drive alternatives and vehicles with stronger performance before assuming the top trim is automatically the best Niro.

More safety tech does not make the Niro autonomous

Kia is making driver assistance a bigger part of the 2027 Niro’s pitch. Standard equipment includes Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with expanded detection functions, Blind-Spot Collision Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance, Lane Following Assist and Smart Cruise Control 2. The upper trims then add Highway Driving Assist or Highway Driving Assist 2 and extra camera views.

Those systems can be genuinely helpful, but the names need translation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s driver-assistance technology guide makes clear that systems combining steering and acceleration or braking assistance still require the driver to remain engaged and attentive. NHTSA also maintains a 5-Star Safety Ratings database that shoppers can use when crash-test information for a specific model becomes available.

That is particularly important with a name such as Highway Driving Assist 2. The “2” identifies a newer Kia assistance package. It does not mean the car has become autonomous or that the driver can stop paying attention. The driver remains responsible.

The camera features may be easier to appreciate immediately. Blind-Spot View Monitor can place a camera view of the adjacent lane in the instrument display when the turn signal is used, while Surround View Monitor creates a multi-camera view around the car during low-speed maneuvering. In a small crossover, neither is essential, but both can make dense parking lots and urban traffic less stressful.

Kia is turning Niro into a specialist

The most interesting part of the refresh is not the lighting signature or the screen size. It is Kia’s decision to make the Niro a hybrid specialist.

The 2026 model year still included a Niro EV, and the Niro name has previously covered plug-in hybrid variants as well. Kia now has a much broader family of dedicated electric vehicles, so asking the Niro badge to carry every flavor of electrification is less necessary than it once was.

A focused hybrid Niro also fits buyers who want lower fuel consumption but are not ready to organize their lives around charging. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that conventional hybrids combine an internal-combustion engine with one or more electric motors and do not require external charging. That is familiar technology, and familiarity can be a feature.

The downside is that the Niro has fewer answers for shoppers who want something else. There is no all-wheel-drive version in Kia’s 2027 pricing sheet. There is no more powerful hybrid powertrain. And the top trim’s delivered price now lands above $40,000.

That is why I would treat the 2027 Niro as a very specific tool rather than a default recommendation. The buyer who makes the most sense for it wants excellent fuel economy, compact dimensions, a conventional refueling routine and modern cabin technology. The buyer who prioritizes power, winter traction or maximum vehicle for the money should comparison-shop aggressively.

The new S may end up being the cleverest version because it stays close to the base price while adding comfort equipment people actually use. The EX is still sensible. The SX and SX Touring require a stronger case because their prices rise much faster than their efficiency.

Kia has made the 2027 Niro cleaner in purpose and sharper in presentation. It is no longer trying to be every kind of electrified crossover. That clarity is welcome. The pricing, however, means the Niro now has to prove that being exceptionally efficient is worth paying a little more for.
