BMW Plant Woodruff Will Build 2027 iX5 Batteries

BMW’s first fully electric vehicle assembled in the United States won’t begin with a completed battery arriving from another continent. The 2027 BMW iX5 will use high-voltage batteries assembled at Plant Woodruff, a new facility near BMW’s X-model factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Series battery production is scheduled to begin in December 2026 as Spartanburg launches iX5 production late in the year. U.S. deliveries are expected in early 2027. Together, the plants create a connected manufacturing system: Woodruff assembles the battery, while Spartanburg installs it into the midsize electric crossover.

That distinction matters. Plant Woodruff doesn’t manufacture the individual battery cells. It receives cylindrical Gen6 cells from suppliers, checks them and turns them into complete high-voltage battery packs ready for vehicle production.

Plant Woodruff Turns Cells Into Complete Batteries

BMW says the $700 million Plant Woodruff covers more than 1 million square feet and was designed for next-generation electric vehicles. The operation combines more than 300 employees with roughly 250 robots, but the technology goes beyond automated arms moving parts around a factory.

Every major production step is monitored and documented in real time. BMW-developed artificial-intelligence tools analyze manufacturing data to identify problems, while digital twins helped engineers plan the plant before equipment was operating. Production employees also train in a virtual version of the factory using VR headsets and computers.

The assembly method is called cell-to-pack. Woodruff integrates the cylindrical cells directly into the finished high-voltage battery without conventional modules or extra structural elements. Cells are checked, connected to cooling systems, cleaned by laser and welded before the pack is sealed and inspected.

South Carolina Creates a Shorter EV Supply Chain

BMW describes its strategy as “local for local,” placing battery assembly close to the vehicle plant it supports. Woodruff sits near Spartanburg, reducing the distance a large, heavy and valuable battery must travel before reaching the vehicle assembly line.

BMW sources the cells from specialist manufacturers, then performs additional checks when they arrive at Woodruff. The pack assembly, cooling connections, electronics integration and quality documentation remain under BMW’s control before the battery goes into an iX5.

For buyers, this arrangement isn’t automatically a promise of lower prices. It does, however, give BMW more control over production, quality and logistics. A problem can be traced through a closely connected network rather than across several distant factories and shipping routes.

Gen6 Technology Gives the iX5 Its Big Numbers

The Woodruff battery is central to the BMW iX5’s appeal. BMW says the iX5 60 xDrive will use 144 kWh of net usable energy in the United States, the largest battery fitted to an electric BMW so far. The company estimates up to 435 miles of range, although that figure remains preliminary until EPA certification.

An 800-volt electrical system supports DC fast charging at up to 460 kW. BMW estimates a 10-to-80-percent charge can take 22 minutes under ideal conditions at a sufficiently powerful charger. Those claims place enormous responsibility on Woodruff because range and charging numbers only matter when thousands of battery packs perform consistently.

BMW also says the Gen6 cells reduce CO2-equivalent emissions by about 28 percent per watt-hour compared with the Gen5 cells used in the current iX. Recycled materials are included in the cobalt, lithium and nickel content, and Plant Woodruff requires no fossil fuels for normal operations.

Why Woodruff Matters Beyond One Electric BMW

The iX5 is only the beginning. BMW plans to assemble at least six fully electric models in the United States by 2030, making Plant Woodruff a long-term part of its American strategy rather than a single-model experiment.

Spartanburg already builds BMW X models for customers around the world. Adding nearby battery production turns South Carolina into a center capable of assembling the X5 with gasoline, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric and eventually hydrogen fuel-cell power.

For the iX5 buyer, Plant Woodruff may never be visible from behind the wheel. Yet it will shape the vehicle’s range, charging performance, consistency and availability. That makes this South Carolina factory one of the most consequential pieces of BMW’s electric future.
