Jonathan Clements: Life Lessons, Financial Literacy, and Leaving a Legacy

When I think about what it means to live a meaningful life, Jonathan Clements’ story comes to mind. Jonathan, a respected financial journalist and author, has spent decades teaching people how to make smarter money decisions. But in the past year, his life took a dramatic turn when he was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer known as EGFR exon 20.

Facing a Rare Diagnosis

Jonathan is a healthy, active, 62-year-old nonsmoker someone you wouldn’t expect to be diagnosed with lung cancer. Yet, as he shared, this disease affects about 3,500 people a year in the U.S., regardless of lifestyle. His journey has included twelve months of chemotherapy, radiation treatments on his spine and brain, and even bone cement procedures to stabilize his back. Doctors initially gave him a year to live. Today, Jonathan has exceeded that prognosis and remains grateful and optimistic. His story is not just about survival but about making the most of every day and using his time to create lasting change.

Building Financial Futures for the Next Generation

Despite his health challenges, Jonathan launched the “Getting Going on Savings” initiative to help young adults from less privileged families start their investing journey. The program provides $1,000 to open Roth IRAs for participants, funded by proceeds from his new book and donations.

The pilot will start in Boston, working with the city’s summer jobs program to ensure participants have the required earned income to qualify. Beyond the money, participants will receive financial counseling and practical lessons in saving and investing. Importantly, the initiative is structured as a randomized controlled trial in partnership with MIT’s J-PAL North America, so researchers can measure whether combining money with financial education has a lasting impact.

A Book with Purpose

Jonathan’s latest book, The Best of Jonathan Clements: Classic Columns on Money and Life, gathers more than 60 of his Wall Street Journal columns, selected and edited with the help of well-known financial voices like Bill Bernstein, Jason Zweig, and Christine Benz. All proceeds go directly to funding Roth IRAs for young adults in the program.

Why Early Financial Habits Matter

Jonathan has long believed that starting young is the key to financial security. He often points to how he encouraged his own children to save and invest, which helped them achieve financial stability in their 30s. Research backs this up: people who combine financial education with real-world experience are far more likely to build lasting habits than those who only receive classroom-style instruction.

The goal is simple but profound: by giving young adults both the knowledge and the resources to start investing, the initiative could help break cycles of poverty and build long-term financial independence.

Supporting the Cause

Donations can be made through the John C. Bogle Center for Financial Literacy. Options include direct gifts, donor-advised funds, or qualified charitable distributions from IRAs for those aged 75 and older. Jonathan highlights the tax advantages of these contributions, ensuring that every dollar has maximum impact. The initiative has already received strong support, with plans to expand and adapt based on what the pilot reveals.

Raising Awareness Beyond Money

Jonathan also wants people to recognize the randomness of lung cancer diagnoses. Rare genetic forms like EGFR exon 20 can strike nonsmokers with no family history. His message is a reminder to take unusual symptoms seriously and to live fully because none of us can predict what lies ahead.

A Legacy of Impact

Jonathan Clements has always been about more than dollars and cents. Today, his mission blends financial wisdom with human resilience: to give young people the tools to build a better financial future and to inspire the rest of us to use our time well. His story shows that even in the face of personal hardship, we can all leave something meaningful behind.
